You’ve bought yourself some CBD oil – now what? As someone new to CBD, knowing how much CBD oil to take, when to take it, and how to know if it’s having any effect are just some of the many questions you may be wondering about. To help you understand how to take CBD oil and ensure you have the best experience possible, our resident CBD expert, Ruby Deevoy founder of thecbdconsultancy.com, is here to take you through it all, step by step.

1.  Step 1: Start low, go slow

Did you know, everyone’s CBD dose is totally unique? That’s why there are no hard and fast dosage instructions and recommended dosing differs dramatically from one product to the next. Some brands label their products with a 70mg maximum dose per day, other 200mg. Some advise you take a whole or half pipette, others suggest 2-3 drops. Furthermore, the advice remains the same regardless of what strength of oil you’ve purchased! Overall, dosage guidance is very unhelpful. Here’s how to figure out how much to take:

  • The amount of CBD oil you will need to feel the effects will depend on a variety of factors, including your natural level of endocannabinoids and endocannabinoid receptors, medical sensitivity, weight, age, blood volume and reason for using CBD in the first place. Without taking an endocannabinoid level test (which are hard to come by in the UK), it’s up to you to work out your dose.
  • To do this, start with 2-3 drops placed under your tongue 2-3 times a day. This is called microdosing, and will allow your body to gradually accumulate both the cannabinoids in the CBD oil and your own naturally produced endocannabinoids, which it supports.
  • You may notice something right away, or you might feel nothing. Everyone is different. If you do feel an effect it’s likely to be a sense of calm, uplifted mood, relaxed or even energised! You might also feel slightly light headed for a few minutes. If you take a dose that’s a little strong for your needs, you may experience mild dizziness, sleepiness, heart racing, headache or nausea – but this will pass very quickly and is unlikely when building up gradually.
  • Studies have safely used up to 1500mg in a single dose with no serious side effects. This is a huge dose and considerably more than you’re going to take (unless you drink a bottle in one, which I don’t recommend!), but hopefully will help you feel safe in the knowledge that you won’t harm yourself by upping your dose – which will be covered shortly!
2. Step 2: Aid absorption

CBD oil in the form of oral drops is the most commonly bought CBD product around the world. While you can just swallow the drops, what they’re really meant for is sublingual absorption – through your sublingual gland under your tongue. Unless your CBD product is labelled as ‘water soluble’ or ‘nano-emulsion’ it is an oil formulation, which is not readily absorbed by the body as it is largely made of water – water and oil don’t mix. Because of this, only a fraction of the oil you take can be actively used by the body, so you need to ensure you’re getting the most out of it that you can.

The most important thing to do is hold those drops under your tongue for at least two minutes. This simply gives the product time to be absorbed directly into your bloodstream. On top of that, if you take your drops directly after eating something fatty, the additional fat molecules in your mouth will help carry the oil through that barrier. You can also take the drops after brushing your teeth which (like chewing food) will increase blood flow to your mouth and increase absorption five-fold.

3. Step 3: Up your dose

You’ve started with a couple of drops 3 times a day. If you’re not noticing much difference in your daily life and you’ve not experience any adverse effects, it’s time to up your dose!
Again, it’s a good idea to do this gradually for two reasons: so you don’t take too much for your needs, and so you can pinpoint the exact dose that works for you.

If appropriate for you, add a couple of drops to each daily dose each week. Continue this process until you notice positive change and higher doses either feel too much or seem to make no difference. As mentioned, studied doses are extremely high, so don’t worry about building it up if the lower dose isn’t working for you.

Once you’ve figured out how to take CBD oil and found an amount that works for you, you may want to calculate out what your dose is. Here’s the sum you need to figure out the amount you’re taking per drop (if not listed on the label):

  • Mg ÷ ml = CBD per 1ml dropper
  • Divide the total by the number of drops in the 1ml dropper (usually 20 although check with the supplier)
4. Step 4: Be consistent

CBD oil can take some time to accumulate and rebalance your body, so it’s important to be patient and consistent. This is not a supplement to take as and when you feel like you need it. The idea is that if you take it regularly and keep a steady level of cannabinoids and endocannabinoids in your body, those moments of need are less likely to arise, because they’ll be kept in check in general!

5. Step 5: Enhance your experience
