An argument that surfaces time and again for CBD nay-sayers is that how can one product do so many things?

Millions of CBD fans around the world claim to use this cannabis derived oil for just about everything, from sleep disturbances and anxiety, to a wide variety of ‘treatment resistant conditions’. But how many of these reports can actually be legit? Is CBD a genuine panacea?

Is CBD a Cure-all

The short answer, is no. CBD is not a cure-all.

You can’t expect to take this supplement while eating an unhealthy diet, living a sedentary lifestyle and slacking on mental health practices like meditation or seeking professional counselling, and see miraculous results. It’s also not something that will have a huge, noticeable impact on everyone and every ailment. But the 41,000+ studies we now have exploring the potential therapeautic benefits of cannabis (largely focusing on cannabinoids CBD and THC) and the endocannabinoid system with which it interacts, do demonstrate that this plant – and even the CBD molecule alone – does have the ability to cause a number of actions in the body. Many of these actions can be (and often is) life-changing for the right person.

The multiple mechanisms of CBD

The CBD molecule is pleiotropic. This means it has multiple mechanisms via different pathways in the body.

These pathways include the direct activation of serotonin and vanilloid receptors (which, among other things, play a major role in pain transmission, digestion and mood), partial activation of dopamine receptors and a unique , supporting interaction with the endocannabinoid system, which regulates all bodily functions.

CBD offers a range of results

As you can imagine, having so many different avenues makes for an impressive array of results. What’s more, it also means that CBD (and cannabis as a whole) is adaptogenic, and will change its actions (and therefore the outcome) depending on what the body it enters needs to find balance. This can even be opposing effects that occur at the same time! For example, feeling more energized in the day while sleeping better at night.

Is CBD a Cure-all? No. But it’s immense potential does make for some exciting possibilities. While the wide-spread actions are impressive, it doesn’t mean it’s the answer to everything.

Not all CBD oil is made equal

Aside from the fact that not everyone will benefit from CBD, there’s also the important point that not all CBD is equal.

There are many brands out there using poor quality hemp, parts of the plant that are less abundant in cannabinoids, or processing that leaves the oil seriously lacking. Lots of brands are even using exactly the same formulation, bought as a ‘white label’ product before hiking the price up for unsuspecting customers.

Because of this, some people find that one product does nothing for them, while another might prove to be far more effective.

How to choose a good CBD oil

There are a number of things to look for when buying CBD products, to ensure you’re getting the highest quality for your money. But don’t worry, it’s not overwhelming!

If you’re wondering how to choose a good CBD oil, reading this quick guide will probably make shopping for CBD oil considerably easier, and more cost-effective too!

Check the spectrum

– you may have seen CBD products labelled as ‘full spectrum’, ‘broad spectrum’ or ‘isolate’. This is referring to the cannabinoid and terpene content present in the oil.

  • Full spectrum offers the widest range of cannabinoids (usually 5 or 6), including a very low, legal level of THC. It may also contain additional terpenes and flavonoids if you’re lucky!
  • Broad spectrum offer a selection of cannabinoids but without the THC.
  • Isolate is just the CBD molecule on its own.
Many people prefer using a full spectrum product for ‘the entourage effect’ – when all parts of the plant work together in synergy. Some may prefer to forgo the THC (it’s not enough to get you high, but may show up on drug tests which can be problematic for professional athletes). Others may choose an isolate product, as there are lots of very exciting studies looking at the CBD molecule alone, or perhaps if they have an allergy to a terpene.

Check the lab reports

– knowing what’s actually in your CBD oil is a key part of finding a product that works for your needs. It will also show that the product is free from contaminants. Want to know more about what to look out for and how to read a COA (certificate of analysis)? Click here

Is CBD a Cure-all? Nothing is. But more often than not CBD is a great natural supplement to add to a healthy diet and lifestyle. Choosing a high quality product from a trusted brand will increase your chances of seeing the results you’re hoping for!
